Honorary appointment success of Dr Anand Ahankari

Anand is working on the DEVELOP project funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund allocated to the University of Hull. Dr Pavel Ovseiko based at the University of Oxford is one of the co-investigators on this grant. Following the successful implementation of the DEVELOP phase 1 over 2018-19, Anand was invited to apply for an honorary post as an ‘Academic Visitor’ with the Radcliffe Department of Medicine, University of Oxford. Prof Mark Hayter who is PI on the DEVELOP project provided support for this appointment along with recommendation by Dr Ovseiko. This will help Anand to strengthen the existing collaboration and will also provide facilitated access for future grant applications, collaborations and networking at Oxford.

NIHR grant success for Prof Lesley Smith and Dr Anand Ahankari

Professor Smith and Dr Ahankari have been successful in obtaining the NIHR Public Involvement grant to support the development of a research project called ‘ROSEANNE’. This will help plan an intervention programme to address impacts of alcohol on preconception health and reproductive outcomes. Two workshops will be conducted in Hull to plan a full grant application to the NIHR and/or MRC early in 2020. Dr Andrea Hilton will be also involved in the workshops and will contribute to the future research development.

Global Challenges Research Fund project on gender equality in rural India.

Professor Mark Hayter and Dr Anand Ahankari were in India recently completing work on their Global Challenges Research Fund project on gender equality in rural India. The visit included establishing a national expert advisory panel on gender equality research, disseminating the results of the project and discussing future research plans. The project completed a survey of 1400 Indian adolescents that measured their attitudes towards gender equality and a qualitative evaluation of gender equality groups in 12 rural villages in the state of Maharashtra, India. Project summary

In India, gender discrimination and related violence cause serious health, wellbeing and development challenges affecting girls and women–particularly in deprived communities. Work to address these problems in communities are a key aim of local, regional and national health and social agencies in India. To address these challenges, the team at the University of Hull is partnering with three institutes in India who are working to improve gender equality and tackle gender related violence through community based projects. The UK team will help the Indian partners to design projects to involve young boys and girls in gender equality practices. Further, an evaluation of the on-going ‘responsible couples’ project will allow them to develop a national level initiative to reduce violence against women/girls. The project will also develop the research skills of local health staff, and help them design a future research and development projects to improve gender equality in India.

NIHR grant success for Dr Anand Ahankari and Professor Mark Hayter

Dr Ahankari and Professor Hayter have been successful in obtaining an NIHR PPI grant to support the development of an NIHR Research for Patient Benefit grant application for a project to evaluate combined sexual health, mental health and substance misuse services for adolescents in England.

India Research Collaboration Visit by Prof Mark Hayter and Dr Anand Ahankari

Prof Hayter and Dr Ahankari received a travel award from the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF, responsive mode fund) to design projects around gender equality in India. During the 6 days visit, they conducted meetings with the Swiss-Aid international agency based in Pune, the Centre for Health and Social Justice group based in New Delhi, and the Halo Medical Foundation (HMF) based in Osmanabad.

The visit enabled opportunities to interact with gender equity project staff, stakeholders, representatives from the State Department of Health, healthcare and allied professionals through HMF's network in Osmanabad district.

The Hull team in collaboration with Indian partners will work further to finalise project design to prepare submissions for the GCRF, and other relevant funding agencies in the UK, Europe, and India. The visit also included meetings to plan for an MRC grant application to research interventions to address anaemia in Indianfemale adolescents.

They will be visiting educational and health institutions and NGO’s and giving research seminars in colleges and universities in the region as part of planning for a major project with Indian health partners.
