New publication on telehealth in the British Journal of Cardiac Nursing


Abstract: The management of long-term conditions such as chronic heart failure (CHF) will need to change due to a growing ageing population and the need to deliver health care within finite resources. Telehealth (or remote patient monitoring) is being introduced as a possible solution to meet these demands and has implications for the way nursing care is delivered and how services are reorganised. This paper guides nurses and their managers on how to meet the challenges of implementing a telehealth service for CHF management by exploring the possible barriers and pitfalls to its introduction, and comparing the advantages and disadvantages of different nursing telehealth service models in use in the UK.

Kevin Goode co-authors publication on heart rate and atrial fibrillation in heart failure

 

Kevin Goode has co-authored:


"In patients with CHF (chronic heart failure) and a reduced LVEF (left ventricular ejection fraction), slower resting ventricular rate is associated with better survival for patients in SR (sinus rhythm) but not for those with AF (atrial fibrillation)."

BSH presentation on Telehealth leads to article in Future Cardiology


Dr Kevin Goode gave a presentation at the British Society for Heart Failure meeting in London (Nov 2013) which has lead to a commissioned opinion article appearing in the March edition of the journal Future Cardiology.

"...as telehealth becomes more sophisticated and perhaps the only economic option for the delivery of chronic disease management, might we see a shift from self-management to one of surveillance by the state?"

"Indeed, given the societal costs of nonadherence, what responsibility does the state have to ensure that patients comply with their medication?"

New publication on how to evaluate telehealth services

Abstract: As home telemonitoring (HTM) moves away from randomised controlled trials and towards the mainstreaming of services, a clear set of guidance on how to evaluate them is needed. Without appropriate and systematic evaluations, the healthcare sector and those who commission its services will not be able to learn important lessons about which aspects of HTM work best. This article will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different strategies that can be employed by commissioners and service providers in the evaluation of HTM services.

Kevin Goode & David Barrett win telehealth service evaluation contract with Merke Sharp & Dohme

Catching up on old news since it is still good news. Dr KevinGoode and David Barrett were successful in winning a substantial contract with MSD in 2013 to evaluate a telehealth service for patients with heart failure and COPD. The project started in August 2013 and is expected to deliver results in Q2 of 2015.




The project is entitled “Enabling Self Care through technology: Evaluation of the MSD Telehealth service”. As an enterprise activity it has been designed with research outputs in mind so that findings from telehealth service delivery can meet the rigour of peer reviewed publication. It will seek to address the following areas;
Work Package 1 - Activity data: (a) understanding service usage and activity; (b) understanding alert escalation rates; (c) understanding measurement adherence

Work Package 2 – Clinical effectiveness and outcomes: This will be achieved through a case-matched analysis against a number of registry databases including Hull-Lifelab (Academic Cardiology, HYMS) to enable comparison of the service patients against a control group; without the need for a randomised control trial. Also exploring whether telehealth increases self-care or reduces carer burden.
Work Package 3 – Economic benefits: Does the service translate into cost savings and/or increased case load management?

Work Package 4 – User and carer experience: Understanding the user’s experience of telehealth and of those who care for the patient.
Work Package 5 – Provider and practitioner experience: Understanding the telehealth nurse and GP experience of using telehealth.

Kevin Goode wins Industrial Case Studentship from EPSRC in collaboration with Philips Research UK

Dr Kevin Goode has successfully won an Industrial Case Studentship from the Engineering Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in collaboration with Philips Research UK to fund a PhD studentship for a project entitled:

Predictive Algorithms for Telehealth Service Improvement and Evaluation (PATSIE):  The development of predictive algorithms using recurrent and competing clinical events combined with cost data to  improve the efficacy of telehealth service delivery and evaluation in chronic disease management

Project Aim :To develop a set of novel statistical methods that will enable robust evaluation of telehealth services in an integrated care context. This will facilitate a better understanding of current and future telehealth service deployments and enable service streamlining, innovation and re-design.
