Telehealth evaluation work for Merck Sharpe and Dohme by David Barrett was reported in The Times in an advertorial entitled: 'How health devices bring NHS care into the home'.

The work was focused on COPD and heart failure using devices that patients can use to monitor themselves and report how they are feeling toa team of Closecare nurses,

Of the work, David was quoted as saying: 'Telehealth - remote patient monitoring - makes people feel reassured that someone is keeping an eye on them and taking their own blood pressure or weighing themselves each day may also help them to take more responsibility for their own health'.

"In patients with CHF (chronic heart failure) and a reduced LVEF (left ventricular ejection fraction), slower resting ventricular rate is associated with better survival for patients in SR (sinus rhythm) but not for those with AF (atrial fibrillation)."

BSH presentation on Telehealth leads to article in Future Cardiology

Dr Kevin Goode gave a presentation at the British Society for Heart Failure meeting in London (Nov 2013) which has lead to a commissioned opinion article appearing in the March edition of the journal Future Cardiology.

"...as telehealth becomes more sophisticated and perhaps the only economic option for the delivery of chronic disease management, might we see a shift from self-management to one of surveillance by the state?"

"Indeed, given the societal costs of nonadherence, what responsibility does the state have to ensure that patients comply with their medication?"

"Since the introduction of the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF), GPs have been incentivised to keep a register of patients diagnosed with heart failure (HF). Such registers are only effective if they are audited regularly, since they are likely to contain errors and omissions. GRASP-HF is a new tool designed to help busy practices achieve a systematic approach to the identification, diagnosis and management of patients with HF."
