Celebrating British Science Week with local schools and eminent scientists!

Around fifty Year 10 pupils from local secondary schools including Malet Lambert, Sirius Academy, Newland School for Girls and Winifred Holtby are set to spend the day at Wilberforce College, on Thursday 12th March, in celebration of British Science Week!

There’ll be a host of activities happening to enable aspiring scientists from both the four local schools involved and the College’s own science students delve deeper into the fascinating worlds of science, technology, engineering and maths.

Presentations from eminent research scientists including Dr Carol Hegarty, Senior Manager of Clinical Operations at Reckitt-Benckiser and Dr Chris Chase, Pathology Training Manager at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust are taking place together with hands on water-based activities from Yorkshire Water and Hull-based, ethical cleaning company, Bio-D.

There will also be a strong presence from Hull University STEM professionals with speakers Dr David Benoit, Senior Lecturer in Molecular Physics and Astrochemistry and

Dr Barbara Guinn, Reader in Biomedical Science lending their support to the day.

Wilberforce Science staff are teaching Masterclasses in their specialist subjects and the ’Seeds of Change’ group, who promote environmentally friendly initiatives at the College, are producing a vegetarian friendly lunch of hand-made, stone baked pizzas and freshly produced smoothies.

Dr Martin Walker, from the College’s Science Department, a British Science Association member, who has master-minded the celebration says:

‘We’re delighted to bring both extremely experienced and aspiring scientists from our local community together in a celebration of all things STEM at Wilberforce College. British Science is world leading and offers enquiring minds both great career possibilities and cutting edge research opportunities and that’s really worth celebrating!’
