Out & About
Lizzie Ette
As a relatively new member of the University of Hull adult nursing teaching team, I have found it really useful to go out and about to support local events recently.
Grimsby Auditorium, for the North East Lincs Skills fair |
In July, we were invited to attend the North East Lincolnshire Skills Fair, held at Grimsby Auditorium. This was a truly HUGE event organised in partnership with North East Lincolnshire Council, with multiple activities taking place throughout the day, and proved to be another great chance to make and retain links with fellow providers and potential students from across the region. A high point for me was bumping into old friends and University of Hull Alumni, and hearing all about their career successes since qualifying!
If you have time, do volunteer to attend similar events in future as they are another great way to keep in touch with everything going on ‘out there’ and to promote the Faculty of Health and Social Care, and the Nursing, Midwifery and allied health professionals courses.

Athena SWAN
Athena SWAN Charter was established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM). In May 2015 the charter was expanded to recognise work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL), and in professional and support roles. The charter now recognises work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women in higher education and research.
The Athena Swan Charter has a proven impact as a catalyst for change, leading to organisational and cultural transformation that makes a real difference for women and enables all staff to achieve their maximum potential. Being part of an internationally-recognised gender equality initiative can help our institution meet equality legislation requirements, as well as the requirements and expectations of some funders and research councils and align with policy priorities.
Did you know that the Faculty of Health and Social Care is submitting an application for a Bronze award in November 2016? If you would like to know more about the work of Athena Swan, why don’t you join us for a bite to eat over the lunchtime period 12-2pm. You will have the opportunity to meet members of the Athena SWAN steering group who will be able to answer any questions you might have.
We are looking for new members who are motivated and interested in playing an important role as part of the Athena Swan steering group. If you would like to know more about becoming an Athena Swan Champion please contact Kirsty Fishburn on k.fishburn@hull.ac.uk
Dates: 17th Aug, 7th & 14th Sept 2016 all Wednesdays Calder Helpdesk
